Red Sox close to deal with top pick Groome
Prep southpaw one of two remaining unsigned 2016 first-round selections
The Red Sox are closing in on a deal with first-round pick Jason Groome, according to MLB.com's Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo.
The club has not confirmed any details to this point.
No deal has been reached, but both sides are working toward an agreement, and it is looking increasingly likely Groome will sign before Friday's 5 p.m. ET deadline.
• Boston's 2016 Draft picks
Groome, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2016 Draft, will receive a roughly $3.75 million bonus from Boston, per Callis and Mayo.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound lefty from Barnegat High School in New Jersey has the looks of a future top-of-the-rotation starter. He features a fastball that sits at 93-94 mph and can reach 96 mph, and he has a nasty curveball with tight rotation and bite.

Groome and No. 7 pick Braxton Garrett of the Marlins are the only two first-rounders yet to sign contracts.
