Home-plate umpire Chad Fairchild is hit by a foul ball on the right forearm off the bat and exits the game in the 1st inning

ST. LOUIS -- Home-plate umpire Chad Fairchild was struck near his right elbow by a foul tip in the first inning on Friday and removed from the game between the Marlins and Cardinals -- a 7-6 Marlins win -- at Busch Stadium.

Fairchild was shaken up on Matt Holliday's foul ball, which appeared to deflect off the side of Fairchild's elbow. He was tended to by the Cardinals' training staff, and after a couple of minutes, he walked off the field.

Crew chief Jim Joyce, who opened the game at second base, moved behind the plate, and three umpires handled the game.
