LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers are considering trading outfielder Yasiel Puig before the Aug. 1 non-waiver Trade Deadline, according to a FOX Sports report.

Puig is hitting .256 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 72 games this season with a .705 OPS, the lowest of his four-year career.

The National League Rookie of the Year runner-up in 2013, Puig has been hampered by leg injuries and dogged by controversy, including friction with teammates, ex- teammates and former manager Don Mattingly. He has also missed time this year with recurring hamstring issues.

Puig, 25, is owed the remainder of a $5.5 million salary this year, $8.2 million next year and $9.2 million in 2018.

Earlier Sunday, addressing Puig's season, general manager Farhan Zaidi said he evaluates Puig for the player he is, not the one people think he might be. Zaidi also complimented Puig's all-around game this year.

The anticipated return in early August of outfielder Andre Ethier from a broken right leg, as well as the return of outfielder Joc Pederson from a separate right shoulder, will create a logjam in the Dodgers' outfield, which also includes Howie Kendrick, Trayce Thompson and Scott Van Slyke.

Ken Gurnick has covered the Dodgers since 1989, and for MLB.com since 2001. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
