HOUSTON -- Jon Singleton, the former Astros top prospect who signed a five-year, $10-milion contract upon his promotion to the big leagues in 2014, has been placed on outright waivers, a source told MLB.com Saturday. If he clears waivers, he'll be outrighted to Triple-A and off the 40-man roster. The club has not yet confirmed.

The Astros are trying to clear space on their 40-man roster after signing free-agent pitcher Charlie Morton on Wednesday and trading for catcher Brian McCann on Thursday. The club has also reached an agreement with free-agent outfielder Josh Reddick, though it hasn't been announced. The Reddick deal would fill the last open spot on the 40-man.

It's possible the Astros could be working out a trade involving Singleton, whose struggles at the big league level have lowered his stock in the organization. Singleton, 25, spent all of last season at Triple-A Fresno and hit .202 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs.

He played parts of the 2014 and '15 seasons with Houston, hitting .171 with 14 homers, 15 RBIs and 151 strikeouts in 357 at-bats. Singleton had a chance to win the starting first-base job last spring, but he didn't make the club. First-base prospect A.J. Reed wound up getting called up later in the season, pushing Singleton down the depth chart.

Singleton is still owed $2 million in each of the next two seasons, and the deal includes three club options for $2.5 million, $5 million and $13 million.
